Shanghai–Zhouzhuang Itinerary: Where to Sleep as a Foreign Passport Holder

A foreign passport holder’s Shanghai–Zhouzhuang plan is two bases: three nights in central Shanghai (Huangpu) and one night in the Zhouzhuang water town, or a Zhouzhuang day trip with all nights in Shanghai. The water town is about an hour west by bus or car, and both bases have licensed hotels that register foreigners — but the tiny lane inns in Zhouzhuang vary, so confirm the licence before booking.

Two bases, or one with a day trip

Shanghai is the metropolis; Zhouzhuang is the “water town” of canals and stone bridges that everyone photographs. You do not need a hotel between them. Sleeping in Huangpu keeps Shanghai’s sights walkable, and sleeping one night in Zhouzhuang lets you see the canals at dawn before the day-trippers arrive. Each check-in is a single clean registration.

Hotels must register foreign guests with public security. Licensed Shanghai and Zhouzhuang hotels do this at check-in; small lane guesthouses may not be licensed for foreigners. Confirm before paying — see can foreigners stay in Chinese hotels. For the Shanghai side, see best area to stay in Shanghai, which lists the districts with the deepest foreigner-licensed stock.

Day 1–3 — Shanghai, Huangpu base

Land at PVG or SHA. Settle in a Huangpu hotel between the Bund and People’s Square (Line 2). Bund, Lujiazui, the French Concession, and a museum day. Sleep in Huangpu three nights. For river-view picks, see where to stay near the Bund.

Day 4 — Zhouzhuang day, or overnight

Bus or driver west to Zhouzhuang (~1 hour). Walk the canals, the twin bridges, and the old merchant houses. Either return to Shanghai for the night or check into a confirmed-foreigner Zhouzhuang inn and sleep there. Registration resets if you stay; show your passport.

Day 5 — Depart or a slow Shanghai morning

If you slept in Zhouzhuang, return to Shanghai for your flight. If you day-tripped, enjoy a last Shanghai morning, then depart. Four to five nights, one or two bases.

Picking each base

Shanghai’s Huangpu is the historical core and the surest foreigner-licensed cluster; Pudong’s Lujiazui suits tower-hotel lovers. Zhouzhuang’s lane inns are atmospheric but confirm the foreigner licence, as some are not licensed; the day-trip option avoids that risk entirely if you prefer one base.

Payment and booking notes

International Shanghai hotels take foreign cards; Zhouzhuang smaller places often prefer cash or Alipay. Confirm via confirm hotel accepts foreign guest before paying. Book through best OTA for foreigners so the foreigner policy shows in the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night in Zhouzhuang enough?

Yes for the canals and the dawn light. Many visitors day-trip and sleep in Shanghai — both work.

Should I sleep in the water town?

Only if you book a confirmed-foreigner inn. The dawn calm is special, but the lane inns vary in licence.

Do Zhouzhuang inns take foreigners?

Licensed ones do; many small ones don’t. Confirm, or day-trip from Shanghai.

Will my card work?

At international Shanghai hotels, yes. At Zhouzhuang spots, often no. Carry cash.

Is the bus easy for foreigners?

Yes — frequent coaches from Shanghai’s bus stations, or a DiDi; the drive is about an hour.

Is Zhouzhuang too touristy?

It gets busy midday; that is exactly why an early or overnight visit pays off. Go at opening.

When is best to visit?

Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is humid; winter is cold but misty and quiet on the canals.
