Xi’an–Chengdu High-Speed Itinerary: Where to Sleep as a Foreign Passport Holder

For a foreign passport holder, the Xi’an–Chengdu high-speed route is two bases of three nights each. Sleep in Xi’an inside the city wall (Beilin or Lianhu) and in Chengdu around Jinjiang or Qingyang. The bullet train between them takes about 3–4 hours, and both cities are packed with licensed hotels that register foreigners cleanly — so you check in twice and ride once.

Two ancient capitals, two bases

Xi’an is the Terra-cotta heart and the best-preserved walled city in China; Chengdu is the panda-and-food capital of the west. The train makes combining them easy, and you need no hotel between them. Staying inside each city’s core keeps the signature sights walkable and your passport registration to two tidy entries.

Chinese hotels must register foreign guests with public security. Licensed Xi’an and Chengdu hotels do it at check-in; tiny lane guesthouses may not be licensed for foreigners. Confirm before paying — see can foreigners stay in Chinese hotels.

Day 1 — Arrive Xi’an, base inside the wall

Fly into Xi’an Xianyang (XIY). Settle in a hotel inside or just outside the city wall — Beilin (near the Forest of Steles) or Lianhu (near the Muslim Quarter). Evening food crawl in the Muslim Quarter. Sleep in Xi’an for three nights. For area picks, see best area to stay in Xi’an.

Day 2 — Terra-cotta Army, return

Morning at the Terra-cotta Army (book ahead, passport-matched tickets), afternoon back inside the wall for the Bell and Drum towers. Sleep in Xi’an. For the sight’s lodging context, see where to stay near the Terra-cotta Army.

Day 3 — Wall and museums

Cycle the city wall, visit the Shaanxi History Museum, evening on the wall’s lantern-lit ramparts. Sleep in Xi’an.

Day 4 — Train to Chengdu, change base

High-speed train Xi’an–Chengdu (~3–4 hours). Check in to a Jinjiang or Qingyang hotel near the river or the Wide and Narrow Alleys. Registration resets; show your passport. Evening hotpot.

Day 5 — Pandas and alleys

Panda base early (book ahead), then the Wide and Narrow Alleys and Jinli. Sleep in Chengdu. For district detail, see best area to stay in Chengdu.

Day 6 — Leshan or Emei day, return

Train or driver to Leshan’s Giant Buddha or Emei Shan; back to your Chengdu base. Six nights, two bases.

Picking each base

Xi’an’s Beilin district puts the museum quarter and the wall at your door; Lianhu is next to the Muslim Quarter’s food. Chengdu’s Jinjiang hugs the river and nightlife; Qingyang holds the alleys and calmer streets. All four areas have strong foreigner-licensed hotel supply.

Payment and booking notes

International hotels in both cities take foreign cards at the desk; smaller lane guesthouses may not. Book the train through best OTA for foreigners with passport ID. Keep confirmations for check-in, where you present your passport for registration.
