For a foreign passport holder, the 5-day Guilin–Yangshuo route works best as two bases: two nights in Guilin city (near the Li River or the pedestrian streets) and three nights in Yangshuo (near West Street or along the Yulong River). A licensed hotel in each registers you normally; the transfer between them is a short bus or boat ride.
Two bases beat one here
Guilin city gives you the karst skyline, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes, and the easy airport/train access. Yangshuo is where the dramatic countryside and the slow river life live. Splitting your stay means you are not doing a 90-minute round trip every day. Both towns have foreigner-licensed hotels, but the inventory differs, so book each separately and confirm the foreigner policy.
Chinese hotels must register foreign guests with public security. Larger Guilin and Yangshuo hotels handle this at check-in; tiny riverside homestays may not be licensed for foreigners. Confirm before paying — see can foreigners stay in Chinese hotels.
Day 1 — Arrive in Guilin, base near the river
Fly into Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) or take the high-speed train to Guilin North/Station. Settle in a hotel in the Xiufeng or Qixing district, ideally walkable to the Li River promenade or Zhengyang Pedestrian Street. Evening stroll along the lakes; sleep in Guilin.
Day 2 — City karsts, then an evening cruise feel
Morning at Elephant Trunk Hill and Folded Brocade Hill, afternoon at the Reed Flute Cave. Keep it light. Sleep in Guilin. Some travelers take the Li River cruise today, but most save the full cruise for the transfer day to Yangshuo.
Day 3 — Li River cruise to Yangshuo, change base
Take the classic Li River cruise (4–5 hours) from Guilin to Yangshuo, or a faster bus. Check out of your Guilin hotel and check in to a Yangshuo hotel near West Street (lively) or along the Yulong River (quiet, more scenic). Your registration resets at the new hotel — show your passport again.
Day 4 — Yangshuo countryside
Rent an e-bike or hire a driver to the Yulong River, Moon Hill, and the rice-field villages. Sleep in Yangshuo. For area specifics, see where to stay near the Guilin Li River, which covers both banks and the Yangshuo side.
Day 5 — Depart or extend
Return to Guilin for your flight/train, or onward to Guizhou or Guangxi cities. Five nights, two bases, no daily long haul.
Night-by-night base plan
| Night | Base area | Why here | Transfer note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guilin (Xiufeng/Qixing) | River promenade, food streets | Taxi/bus from KWL or train |
| 2 | Same Guilin base | City karst sights | On foot or short taxi |
| 3 | Yangshuo (West St/Yulong) | Countryside base | Li River cruise or bus |
| 4 | Same Yangshuo base | Yulong, Moon Hill | E-bike or driver |
| 5 | Same Yangshuo base | Easy Guilin return | Bus/train to airport |
Picking your Yangshuo spot
West Street is the tourist heart: restaurants, bars, and the most hotel choice, but it is busy at night. The Yulong River corridor (Jiuxian, Gaotian) is quieter and prettier, with boutique lodges — verify each takes foreigners, as some are small. If you want the liveliest base with the surest foreigner licence, West Street wins.
Payment and booking notes
International cards work at bigger Guilin hotels; Yangshuo’s smaller places often prefer cash or domestic apps. Book Yangshuo ahead in peak season (spring and autumn) because rooms near the river sell out. Use foreign credit card hotels in China to gauge which tier will take your card.
Frequently asked questions
Two bases — is the move worth it?
Yes. Yangshuo’s scenery is the point of the trip, and sleeping there saves a tiring daily commute from Guilin. The one hotel change is minor.
Can I do it in three nights?
Tightly, yes — one Guilin, two Yangshuo. But five nights lets you actually relax by the river instead of rushing.
Is the Li River cruise worth the time?
For most, yes; it is the iconic view. If short on time, the faster bus still gets you to Yangshuo, and you can raft the Yulong instead.
Do Yangshuo hotels take foreigners?
The bigger West Street hotels do. Small rural lodges vary — confirm. This is the one place where booking blind can backfire.
Will my card work in Yangshuo?
At upscale resorts, often yes. At family guesthouses, usually no. Carry cash as backup.
Is Yangshuo safe at night?
West Street is busy and safe. Quiet riverside lanes are calm; just arrange rides back if you stay out late in the countryside.
When is the best season?
April–May and September–November have the best light and comfortable heat. Summer is humid; winter is cold but crowd-free.
