A foreign passport holder’s 5-day Sanya plan is best across two or three bays: two nights on Sanya Bay (near the city and the night market), two on Yalong Bay (the classic resort beach), and one on Haitang Bay (the luxury and Atlantis strip). All three have licensed beachfront hotels that register foreigners; the difference is price, crowd, and how far you are from town.
Why move between bays
Sanya’s beaches are spread along a crescent, and each bay has a different feel. Sanya Bay is closest to the airport and the city food; Yalong Bay is the postcard white sand with the biggest resort stock; Haitang Bay is newer, with the big themed resorts. Sleeping in two bays lets you sample both without a long daily commute, and each check-in is a clean registration. Staying in one bay is fine too if you want to barely unpack.
Hotels must register foreign guests with public security. Licensed Sanya resorts do this at check-in; small guesthouses may not be licensed for foreigners. Confirm before paying — see can foreigners stay in Chinese hotels. For card acceptance by tier, see foreign credit card hotels in China.
Day 1 — Arrive, base on Sanya Bay
Fly into Sanya Phoenix (SYX). Settle in a Sanya Bay hotel near the Coconut Dream Corridor. Evening at the night market and the beach. Sleep on Sanya Bay for two nights.
Day 2 — City and Sanya Bay
Nanshan Temple (the big sea Guanyin), the Tropical Paradise Forest Park, and a sunset on Sanya Bay. Sleep on Sanya Bay.
Day 3 — Move to Yalong Bay, change base
Short taxi or bus east to Yalong Bay. Check in to a resort on the white-sand strip. Registration resets; show your passport. Afternoon on the beach. Sleep on Yalong Bay for two nights.
Day 4 — Yalong Bay and Haitang
Morning on Yalong Beach, afternoon at Haitang Bay’s outlet and the Atlantis aquarium (stay there if you prefer). Sleep on Yalong Bay.
Day 5 — Depart or one Haitang night
A last beach morning, then your flight. If you want the themed-resort experience, sleep one night on Haitang instead. Five nights, two or three bays.

Picking your bay
Sanya Bay is cheapest and most convenient but the sand is coarser. Yalong Bay has the best beach and the deepest resort stock, and is the surest foreigner-licensed choice. Haitang Bay is flashy and family-focused, with the big waterparks. Match the bay to your budget and mood.
Payment and booking notes
International resorts take foreign cards; smaller Sanya Bay places may not. Confirm via confirm hotel accepts foreign guest before paying, and carry a backup card plus cash. Book through best OTA for foreigners so the foreigner policy shows in the listing.
Frequently asked questions
Is five days enough for Sanya?
For beach time plus Nanshan and a resort day, yes. Add nights if you want diving or a slower pace.
Which bay is best?
Yalong for the beach; Sanya Bay for value and food; Haitang for themed resorts. All register foreigners at licensed hotels.
Do budget hotels take foreigners?
Some do, many don’t. Always confirm. The big resorts are the safe bet.
Will my card work?
At international resorts, yes. At smaller spots, often no. Keep cash.
Is Sanya safe for swimming?
Most resorts have safe, flagged beaches. Watch the season — winter swell can be rough on some stretches.
Should I book now or on arrival?
Book before you fly; peak winter (when the north is freezing) fills the best resorts fast.
When is best to visit?
October–April is the dry, pleasant season. Summer is hot, humid, and typhoon-prone.
