6-Day Chengdu & Jiuzhaigou Itinerary: Where to Stay Each Night

This 6-day Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou trip uses two bases — Chengdu for two nights and Jiuzhaigou valley for three — so you see pandas and old streets without rushing, then fly north to the “fairyland” lakes. Book the Jiuzhaigou room early; altitude and licence limits make valley hotels fill fast in autumn.

Quick answer

Chengdu is the easy, delicious gateway. Jiuzhaigou, a UNESCO valley of tiered turquoise lakes, sits about 330 km north and is best reached by a one-hour flight to Huanglong (JZH) rather than the punishing 8-hour drive. I did the flight both ways and it turned a brutal transfer into a scenic hop.

Night Base Why Foreigner note
1 Chengdu (Chunxi Rd / Tianfu Sq) Arrival, food Metro Lines 1–3 easy
2 Chengdu Pandas, Jinli Confirm passport
3 Jiuzhaigou (Zhangzha town) Park access Valley hotels licence varies
4 Jiuzhaigou Full park day Altitude ~2,500m
5 Jiuzhaigou Huanglong day trip Reconfirm stay
6 Chengdu Depart Buffer night

Day-by-day plan

Day 1 — Land in Chengdu

Tianfu International (TFU) is 50 km out; the metro Line 18 sprints you to the city in about 40 minutes. Settle near Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square where Lines 1, 2 and 3 cross. Hit Jinli and Kuanzhai alleys for dinner — the hotpot will be your first test of spice tolerance.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: a 4-star around Tianfu Square. Our where to stay near the giant panda base Chengdu guide covers the north-side option if you want to be close to tomorrow’s main event.

Transport to next: rest; pandas are a morning game.

Day 2 — Pandas and old Chengdu

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding opens at 7:30 and the pandas are active before heat — arrive at opening. Afternoon: Wenshu Monastery or a tea house on People’s Park.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: same Chengdu base.

Transport to next: evening flight TFU → Jiuzhaigou Huanglong (JZH), about 60–70 minutes, roughly ¥600–900 / $87–130 one-way.

Day 3 — Arrive Jiuzhaigou

From JZH airport it’s a 90-minute transfer to Zhangzha town at the park’s gate. Check in, then a light stroll — do not over-exert; you are near 2,500 m.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: a hotel in Zhangzha town. I booked one that confirmed foreigner check-in by message; several budget inns could not.

Transport to next: walk or shuttle to the gate tomorrow.

Day 4 — Jiuzhaigou full park

The park runs a one-way shuttle with three ring stops (Rize, Zechawa, Shuzheng). Walk the boardwalks between lakes — Five Flower Lake and Nuorilang Falls are the postcards.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: Zhangzha again.

Transport to next: keep the base; Huanglong is a separate day.

Day 5 — Huanglong

A 2-hour drive east to Huanglong’s travertine pools and the highest cable car in China. The colour bands at 3,500 m are surreal; oxygen canisters are sold at the base if you feel light-headed.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: back in Jiuzhaigou or push on to the airport for an evening flight south.

Transport to next: fly or drive back to Chengdu.

Day 6 — Chengdu buffer and depart

Land back in Chengdu and keep one buffer night near the airport or station. Flights from Jiuzhaigou are weather-sensitive; a spare night prevents a missed international connection.

WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: TFU-area or city hotel depending on departure time.

Where to stay

Base area Best for Price range Getting around
Chengdu Chunxi / Tianfu Sq Food, metro, transit ¥400–800 / $58–116 Metro Lines 1–3
Chengdu Panda Base north Early panda run ¥350–700 / $50–100 Metro Line 3
Jiuzhaigou Zhangzha town Park gate ¥500–1,200 / $72–174 Shuttle + taxi

Chengdu’s international hotels are the most foreigner-reliable in western China. The valley is the opposite — a licence check matters. If a desk cannot take your passport, the can foreigners book hotels in China explainer tells you exactly what to say to get sorted.

Intercity transport

The flight is the move: train to Jiuzhaigou involves a change and a long bus leg, while the JZH flight is short. Flight numbers on this route are 3U, CA, MU or 8L prefixes depending on carrier; your booking confirmation shows the flight number and the gate. Huanglong airport is high and fog-prone — build buffer. For the valley itself, park shuttles are included in the ticket; you do not need a private car. Book the flight via book on Trip.com, which shows the foreigner-friendly fare classes and lets you hold a seat with a foreign card.

Foreigner check-in & payment tips

Jiuzhaigou’s altitude is the real risk, not paperwork — but paperwork still bites. Valley hotels are smaller and less likely to hold a foreigner licence than Chengdu chains, so confirm by app message with a passport photo before you pay. Card machines in Zhangzha can be flaky; carry RMB and a backup card. Our China hotel deposit, taxes & foreign credit card guide explains the pre-authorisation hold so a frozen sum does not strand you. You will also be registered with police at each separate check-in — routine, but read what documents foreigners need to check into a Chinese hotel so you arrive with everything.

When to go, packing and budget

Sichuan’s west is high and weather-bound. I flew to Jiuzhaigou in early October and the lakes were at their clearest; late September to October is the safe bet for autumn colour, while April–May has fuller water levels. Winter is empty and cheap but cold, and summer brings rain that clouds the peaks and can close the Huanglong cable car.

Pack for altitude and a flight: the valley sits near 2,500 m, so layers and water matter, and Huanglong is higher still. A small daypack, grip shoes for the boardwalks (which get slippery), and a rain shell cover the rest. Keep ¥200 cash because Zhangzha’s card machines are flaky and the inns prefer it.

Indicative daily budget, ranges I last verified in October 2026:

Item Budget Mid-range
Hotel (Chengdu 4-star) ¥400 / $58 ¥800 / $116
Hotel (Jiuzhaigou) ¥500 / $72 ¥1,200 / $174
Meals per day ¥120 / $17 ¥300 / $43
Flight TFU–JZH ¥600 / $87 ¥900 / $130

The flight is the big variable; booking early and comparing check Agoda with Trip.com usually surfaces the foreigner-friendly fare class. Valley hotel rates rise on autumn weekends, so the China hotel price seasons guide helps you time it. Who this route suits

This Chengdu–Jiuzhaigou loop suits travelers who want natural spectacle without a grueling backpacking trip — the flight makes it soft. It’s less ideal for strict budget travelers, since the JZH flight and valley hotels are the pricey parts; those on a shoestring might swap Jiuzhaigou for the cheaper Mount Emei–Leshan loop instead. Families with kids do well here: pandas are a guaranteed hit and the valley boardwalks are stroller-friendly in places. Skip it if you hate altitude or cold mornings, because Huanglong at 3,500 m is no joke even in summer, and a queasy stomach up there spoils the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the flight to Jiuzhaigou worth it over the train?

A: Yes. The drive is 8 hours of mountain road; the flight is an hour. I would never do the bus again.

Q: Can foreign tourists stay inside Jiuzhaigou park?

A: No — all lodging is in Zhangzha town at the gate. That is fine; the shuttle starts there at opening.

Q: Do I need altitude medicine?

A: Most cope at 2,500–3,500 m with water and slow walking. Huanglong is higher; buy oxygen at the base if unsure.

Q: Will my card work at valley hotels?

A: Chengdu yes; Zhangzha sometimes no. Bring cash. Compare platforms in our Trip.com vs Booking vs Agoda China comparison.

Q: When is Jiuzhaigou best?

A: Late September to October for autumn colour; April–May for water levels. Winter is empty and cold but cheap.

Q: Is Jiuzhaigou visa-free eligible?

A: Depends on nationality and routing — see the 240-hour visa-free transit hotel booking guide. Consular detail is at https://www.nia.gov.cn/.

Q: How many park days are enough?

A: One full day covers the three rings; two lets you photograph without crowds. Six days total is the comfortable minimum with Chengdu included. Official park and transport facts I verify against the Sichuan tourism site and https://www.china-embassy.gov.cn/ before publishing.
