A foreign passport holder’s Guilin–Yangshuo trip is cleanest as two bases: one or two nights in Guilin city and two or three in Yangshuo. The Li River connects them by cruise or bus, and both towns have licensed hotels that register foreigners — but the small riverside inns vary, so confirm the licence before you book each stay.
Why two bases and not one
Guilin is the arrival hub with the airport and train stations; Yangshuo is where the karst countryside and the slow river life actually live. Sleeping in Yangshuo means you wake inside the scenery instead of doing a 90-minute round trip every day. Both towns have foreigner-licensed hotels, yet the inventory differs, so book each separately and confirm the policy.
Chinese hotels must register foreign guests with public security. Larger Guilin and Yangshuo hotels handle this at check-in; tiny riverside homestays may not be licensed for foreign passports. Confirm before paying — see can foreigners stay in Chinese hotels.
Day 1 — Arrive Guilin, base near the river
Fly into Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) or take the high-speed train in. Settle in a hotel in Xiufeng or Qixing, walkable to the Li River promenade or Zhengyang Pedestrian Street. Evening lakeside stroll. Sleep in Guilin. For the river-bank context, see where to stay near the Guilin Li River.
Day 2 — City karsts, then the cruise
Morning at Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave, then the classic Li River cruise (4–5 hours) to Yangshuo, or a faster bus. Check out of Guilin and into a Yangshuo hotel near West Street or the Yulong River. Registration resets; show your passport.
Day 3 — Yangshuo countryside
E-bike or driver to the Yulong River, Moon Hill, and the rice-field villages. Sleep in Yangshuo.
Day 4 — Chill or depart
A slow morning by the river, an afternoon cormorant-fishing show, then return to Guilin for your flight/train. Four or five nights, two bases.
Night-by-night base plan
| Night | Base area | Why here | Transfer note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guilin (Xiufeng/Qixing) | Arrival, river walk | Taxi/bus from KWL/train |
| 2 | Yangshuo (West St/Yulong) | Countryside base | Li River cruise or bus |
| 3 | Same Yangshuo base | Yulong, Moon Hill | E-bike or driver |
| 4 | Same Yangshuo base | Depart or extend | Bus/train to Guilin |
Picking your Yangshuo spot
West Street is the tourist heart — restaurants, bars, and the most hotel choice, but busy at night. The Yulong River corridor is quieter and prettier, with boutique lodges; verify each takes foreigners, as some are small. If you want the surest foreigner licence with nightlife, West Street wins.
Payment and booking notes
International cards work at bigger Guilin hotels; Yangshuo’s smaller places often prefer cash or domestic apps. Book Yangshuo ahead in peak season because river-view rooms sell out. Use foreign credit card hotels in China to gauge which tier will take your card.
Frequently asked questions
Is this different from a longer Guilin trip?
This is the compact version: Guilin as a transit night, Yangshuo as the stay. Add a Guilin night if you want the city’s caves and pagodas at leisure.
Can I skip Guilin entirely?
If you fly or train direct to Yangshuo, yes — but most arrive via Guilin, so one night there is natural.
Do Yangshuo hotels take foreigners?
The bigger West Street hotels do. Small rural lodges vary — confirm. This is the one place booking blind can backfire.
Will my card work in Yangshuo?
At upscale resorts, often yes. At family guesthouses, usually no. Carry cash.
Is the Li River cruise worth it?
For most, yes; it is the iconic view. If short on time, the faster bus still reaches Yangshuo and you can raft the Yulong.
Is Yangshuo safe at night?
West Street is busy and safe. Quiet riverside lanes are calm; arrange rides back if you stay out late.
When is best to visit?
April–May and September–November have the best light. Summer is humid; winter is cold but crowd-free.
