The 4-day Zhangjiajie & Fenghuang itinerary pairs the Avatar mountains of Zhangjiajie with the riverside Fenghuang old town — two nights at the park gate and one in the lamp-lit lanes of Fenghuang. Budget ¥520 / US$72 at the Wulingyuan gate and ¥380 / US$53 in Fenghuang; both walkable to the scenery and foreigner-licensed if you book listed.
Quick Answer
Four days, two bases, four nights, and a short transfer between them. Zhangjiajie is the dramatic finish-the-movie landscape; Fenghuang is the gentle comedown — a Ming-era town on the Tuojiang River with stilt houses and night lanterns. The two are linked by a 2-hour high-speed train or bus, so you lose almost no sightseeing time. Give Zhangjiajie the first two nights and Fenghuang the last.
- Day 1 — Zhangjiajie: Tianmen Mountain & the glass walkway.
- Day 2 — Zhangjiajie: National Forest Park (Avatar peaks).
- Day 3 — Train to Fenghuang; old town at night.
- Day 4 — Fenghuang: morning lanes, then depart.
- Bases — Wulingyuan gate (Zhangjiajie) and Fenghuang old town.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 — Zhangjiajie: Tianmen Mountain
Arrive Zhangjiajie (flight to Hehua airport, 30 min to town, or train to Zhangjiajie West). Settle near the Wulingyuan park gate, then if energy allows, ride the world’s longest cable car up Tianmen Mountain: the 99-bend road, the 999-step stair to the cave gate, and the cliff-hung glass walkway. If you arrive late, save Tianmen for the morning of Day 2 before the park — it’s a half-day, not a full one.
WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: Wulingyuan / Zhangjiajie park gate. Two nights. The where to stay near Zhangjiajie (Wulingyuan) guide explains why gating inside the park beats staying in downtown Zhangjiajie 40 minutes away — you’re first at the entrance when it opens.
Day 2 — Zhangjiajie: National Forest Park
Full day inside the park: the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (Southern Sky Column), the Bailong Elevator (326 m outdoor lift), Tianzi Mountain, and the Golden Whip Stream walk. The Golden Whip Stream is a flat 7 km riverside path — skip it if it has rained (leeches), keep it if dry for the wild macaque sightings. Arrive at opening — the Bailong queue can hit an hour by midday. I run the reverse loop (Tianzi first, Bailong last) to dodge the worst of it.
WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: Same Wulingyuan hotel.
Day 3 — Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang: Riverside Old Town
Morning transfer to Fenghuang — high-speed train from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang Gucheng (about 2 hrs, ¥80 / US$11) or a direct bus (2.5 hrs). The new Fenghuang Gucheng station (opened 2021) cut the trip from 4 hours to 2 — a real upgrade over the old road transfer. Settle in the old town and walk the Tuojiang River banks as the stilt houses light up. The riverside bars and the Hongqiao bridge at night are the memory.
WHERE TO STAY TONIGHT: Fenghuang old town. One night — this is a short, sweet stop, not a base.
Day 4 — Fenghuang: Morning Lanes & Departure
A slow morning in the old town before the day-trippers arrive: the Miao embroidery stalls, the Yang’s Family Residence, and a riverside coffee. The Miao minority’s embroidery and silverwork are the real craft here — a hand-stitched piece runs ¥80–200 and packs flat in a suitcase. Then train to Changsha (1.5 hrs) for the airport, or back toward Zhangjiajie. I usually route Fenghuang → Changsha → international flight; it’s the cleanest exit.
Where to Stay
| Base area | Nights | Nightly (¥ / US$) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan gate | 2 | ¥480–780 / US$67–108 | At park entrance |
| Fenghuang old town | 1 | ¥350–550 / US$48–76 | Riverside lanes |
Fenghuang’s riverfront rooms cost more but the balcony view of the lit stilt houses is worth ¥100 extra — book a “river view” specifically, not just “old town,” or you may end up on a back lane with no water sightline.
Fenghuang’s old-town guesthouses are atmospheric but the most likely on this route to lack a foreigner license — I had one turn a friend away in 2022. Book a listed property via book on Trip.com or check Agoda. Getting Between Cities
Zhangjiajie–Fenghuang is a new high-speed link (Zhangjiajie West → Fenghuang Gucheng, ~2 hrs, ¥80) — book on 12306 (China Railway (12306)) with your passport exact. The bus is slower but drops you closer to the old town if trains are full. From Fenghuang Gucheng station, the shuttle bus to the old town is ¥7 and runs every 20 minutes — don’t take the ¥50 “private” cars touting outside the gate; they’re the same ride at six times the price.
Honest caveat: Zhangjiajie has two stations — Zhangjiajie West (near the park, best) and downtown Zhangjiajie (40 min from the gate). Match your hotel to the right one or you’ll lose an hour. Fenghuang’s station is 30 min by bus from the old town; factor that into Day 3’s timing.
Foreigner Check-in & Payment Tips on the Road
Two bases, two scans. Rural Hunan guesthouses occasionally lack the foreigner license — pre-book every night. Deposits ran ¥500 (Wulingyuan) and ¥300 (Fenghuang); both reversed within a week. The China hotel deposit & foreign credit cards guide covers holds. When I paid the Wulingyuan deposit with a US card, the desk pre-authorized ¥500 and released it on checkout — smooth. Fenghuang’s lanes want Alipay or yuan; cards are rare.

April–May and September–October are best: green peaks, misted valleys, and the Avatar mountains at their photogenic best. Avoid July–August (35°C, humid, crowded) and National Day week. Winter is cold but crowd-free and cheap, with occasional snow on the peaks. I’ve climbed in both April and November; November’s clear, cold days gave the best cloud-sea, but pack a real jacket — the summit wind cuts through a fleece.
| Season | Zhangjiajie | Fenghuang | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | 19°C, misty | 20°C, green | Best for peaks |
| Summer | 31°C, humid | 32°C, steamy | Crowded |
| Autumn | 20°C, clear | 21°C, dry | Best overall |
| Winter | 5°C, cold | 6°C, quiet | Cheapest |
